How to Open a Charity Shop in Ireland

Charity shops across the UK are beginning to reopen their doors after being closed for months due to the coronavirus, but there is now a backlog of around 67 million items of clothing waiting to be donated — and some local drop-off points simply can't cope.

In fact, over in St Ives, Cornwall, one British Heart Foundation store saw a 197% rise in donations.

If you have a donation ready to go, make sure you enquire about the capability of your local shop. It might be more helpful to postpone your visit for now, until the backlog has cleared.

There are many other wonderful things you can do with your unwanted household and clothing items, whether it's upcycling or gifting them to friends.

The team at Giving Assistant have provided some simple things we can all do to help. Take a look at them below...

1. Upcycle what you already have

Upcycling old furniture, home accessories or clothing is a brilliant way to prolong the life of things you no longer use. Whether it's a tired-looking chest of drawers or a worn pair of jeans, why not give them a new lease of life with a little TLC.

The experts at Giving Assistant suggest turning your old jeans into a skirt if you no longer wear them. You can do this by...

1. Choosing an old pair of jeans and cutting them to a desired length.

2. Next, remove the centre seams at the back and take in any loose fabric on the sides.

3. Once you have created the perfect fit, secure everything together by resewing any undone seams – you can even leave the ends unhemmed for an extra distressed look.

2. Use old clothes for cleaning

From old t-shirts to pairs of worn socks, a great way to repurpose these items is to use them as cleaning cloths. Not only will you save money on buying new ones, but you'll also stop the rags ending up in landfill.

Not sure what to do? The team explain: "Simply lay the clothing flat and cut off any sleeves or straps. Once the extremities have been removed, cut the item into the ideal size for your cloth – 12 x 12 inches works well for most. For a more durable rag, hem the edges and double up on fabric. Not only will you have a cloth for all occasions, but you'll also have your own one-of-a-kind rag to show off!"

3. Donate to animal shelters

Animal shelters around the UK are in desperate need of donations, due to the ongoing pandemic. If you're looking for a way to make a difference, consider sending shelters old clothes, dog beds, pet toys and animal coats, too.

For those of you feeling more creative, why not upcycle old clothes into cat jumpers, rope toys and dog beds. Simply cut an old t-shirt into long strips and then braid them together to make a dog-friendly toy. It's a surefire way to make a pup smile.

4. Resell your items online

Looking to make some extra cash? Why not resell your unwanted items to someone who needs them more. Popular websites, such as Depop and eBay, are great for listing clothes, toys, home accessories and books you no longer use.

5. Swap items with friends

Clothes swaps are excellent if you want to pass on items you no longer wear — and swap them for items you actually do want. While larger swaps aren't ideal with the ongoing social distancing requirements, you could alternatively message friends to see if anyone wants your pre-loved goods. Whether it's jumpers, trousers or books, your trash could be someone else's treasure...

6. High street donation schemes

Many popular retailers, such as H&M and Levi's, take part in donation schemes. Simply put, if you drop off a bag of pre-loved clothing, they will thank you with a voucher to spend in stores. It's a win-win!
